Obituary for Herbert Charles Blackmore

Herbert Charles Blackmore, of Burnt River passed away on Friday, September 7, 2018. He was in his 99th year. Beloved husband of the late Dorothy (Doll) Blackmore. Loving father Terry (Mary), Rodney (Sherry) Susan (Craig) and pre-deceased by John. Survived by his daughter-in-law Sandy. Herb was Grandpa and better known to his 10 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and 4 great-great-grandchildren as 'Gumper'. Dear brother of the late Louis, William, Percy, Harry, Glen, Nora, Evelyn, Queenie and Ruth. Dad was a big, kind, gentle hearted man who was loved and respected by many and to whom all would call him friend.

Dad grew up in the Ottawa Valley and joined the 32nd Battery of the Royal Canadian Artillery, 4th Light Anti-Aircraft Unit as a Gunner. He participated in the D-Day invasion and his unit traveled through France, Germany and helped to liberate The Netherlands. While serving overseas he met and married our Mom and after the war they eventually settled in Burnt River, where he worked hard to care for and raise his family and serve as a very active member of the community.

Dad has been lovingly cared for by his Caressant Care McLaughlin family in 2014. No words can express our thanks to you all who have helped our Dad settle into his new life there. Your love and respect for him shone through right to the end when you send him off on his next journey wrapped in a butterfly quilt to keep him warm and the Canadian Flag to keep him safe. Bless you all.

He is now content, finally getting his greatest wish to be back together with Mom and John and finally back home to Burnt River.

"When I come to the end of my journey,
and I travel my last weary mile,
just forget if you can, that I ever frowned,
and remember only the smile."

As per his wishes, Dad will be interred at the Burnt River Cemetery, where a private family service will be held. If desired, memorial donations to the Heart & Stroke Foundation would be appreciated by the family.
