There is always sorrow when someone dear is lost to us, but it’s truly vast and deep when
that person is your oldest, closest friend.

The friendship Megan and I had goes back 54 years, so barring some time here and there
when we drifted along different roads, there isn’t much time gone by that doesn’t hold
memories of us together.

Megan was my girlfriend; my extra sister; my protector (at times); my card partner for
endless games on canasta; my teacher (often); my Wise Woman (always); my memory (for
all those details I just never, ever remember); and even my lifesaver – literally, on one
occasion when she carried me out of a gas-filled cabin!

I never heard of a battle that she’d back down from – in fact, if there was a fight ahead,
Megan would surely be the one leading the charge, waving a flag and beating the drum!

To me, she was the embodiment of Mother Earth herself, and she also had a marvelous
earthy sense of humour to boot…as anyone who saw her “special” Easter chocolates or
somewhat risqué birthday cakes can attest to! And she took a mischievous glee in watching
people’s reactions to those kind of things!

And speaking of food – and loving nourishment – I don’t think there was ever a time (day or
night) when another plate wasn’t set out for an extra visitor, another pot of hot coffee, and
something sweet as well…without a bit of fuss, even when times were hard or it was an
inconvenient time.

Megan sometimes had more than her own share of sorrows and pain, but she was upbeat
about the future. Always. Even if hurting, there would be a big smile, a laugh to fill a room,
a hug to be swallowed by, an encouraging word.

If I had to pick one “Megan saying” to describe her joy for living, it’d be: “Where’s your sense
of adventure?!” Well, the biggest and best adventure of all is surely her long and happy
marriage with Newt…and I’m so glad that she made that choice because it brought Newt into
our lives and he is, quite simply, one of my favourite people ever. Together, they created a
unique universe that we were all lucky to have been part of.

To Newt, and all of Megan’s family, Dennis and I send love and sympathy for the unthinkable
loss of Megan. She is gone from our sight but never from our hearts and minds.

Love you always, Megan.
